CMTL’s pavement testing services provides critical information on pavement condition, properties and performance.

Pavement testing is a vital element in road construction and maintenance projects. Testing limits potential damage to road surfaces, which if left unchecked can lead to cracks, potholes and costly repairs.

Our comprehensive pavement testing service covers coring and analysis of construction materials through to structural condition assessments and utility reinstatement.

Pavement Coring

Coring and Pavement Analysis

Pavement coring involves the extraction of road-based materials for laboratory testing and analysis.

Testing helps determine the strength of the bond between base layers and also assess the drainage characteristics of the pavement.

We provide comprehensive coring analysis both on-site and through our UKAS and INAB accredited laboratories. It’s often conducted in conjunction with our Falling Weight Deflectometer surveys to give an accurate depiction of the pavement performance levels.

FWD Surveys

Falling Weight Deflectometer Survey

Falling weight deflectometer (FWD) surveys provide a quick, non-destructive assessment of ground surface condition.

FWD testing provides an accurate assessment on the structural condition of highways, flexible hard standings and airport runways. A dynamic load is applied to a pavement that simulates the loading from a wheel of a moving vehicle, and the surface performance is measured and logged.

We operate one of the few heavy weight deflectometers in the UK, with a Grontmij / Carl Bro PRIMAX2500 HWD trailer mounted system. Capable of applying loads in the range of 7-250kN, our system is well placed to evaluate the structural behaviour of airport runways and taxiways that are subject to extremely heavy loads on a daily basis.

GPR Surveying

Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) Surveys

Our ground penetrating radar surveys provides a fast and highly investigation of what is happening below the ground.

Below ground surveying techniques are used to identify underground features, prior to excavating, piling, drilling and other construction processes. Often associated with geological applications, radar surveys also apply to investigations into the integrity of concrete structures, the location of buried utilities, fracturing and subsidence monitoring.

Applications for radar surveys include:

  • Civil engineering projects
  • Environmental investigations
  • Police forensic and UXO
  • Archaeology investigations

Utility Reinstatement Testing Service

Utility Reinstatement Testing

CMTL’s utility reinstatement testing service helps confirm your compliance with the current specification for the reinstatement of openings in highways, from the Department of Transport. Our field team of specialists provide a rapid response service, utilising the most appropriate sampling and test equipment. Samples are then tested in one of our INAB accredited laboratories to ensure the highest of standards.

Our utility reinstatement testing services include:

  • Sub-base classification
  • Diamond bit coring to establish construction make-up and thickness
  • Analysis of bituminous materials including compaction, density, air voids and constituents
  • Compaction characteristics of road foundations by dynamic cone penetration or nuclear density testing
